Personal Financial Education & Money Management

SSCAC’s Personal Financial Education and Money Management classes are designed to increase people’s knowledge of and control over their finances.

Taught by SSCAC staff and professionals in the community, Financial Literacy Education classes provide participants with knowledge and skills in the areas of:

  • Setting Financial Goals
  • Developing Savings Habits
  • Understanding and Repairing Credit
  • Budgeting and Record Keeping
  • Investing

Classes are typically held once a month and emphasize the involvement of the whole family in the process. Additionally, single sessions are periodically offered that are geared towards children with the aim to increase their awareness of financial matters at an age appropriate level.

Participants who complete the Financial Literacy Education course gain the skills necessary to establish realistic spending plans in order to meet current financial obligations while working towards longer term goals. One on one follow up may be provided to reinforce skills learned in the course.

At the end of 2009, approximately 60 individuals have participated in financial literacy classes at SSCAC. As a result of their participation, they report they have gained more control of and knowledge about their finances, learned how to set and achieve financial goals, and improved their life situations.

The program is funded by the federal Assets for Independence Program, the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, and private contributors.
