Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The pandemic’s devastating impact was not proportional but instead revealed in stark detail the intersections of economic, racial, and gender inequities in our country and in our communities. This growing awareness was layered with the increasing understanding of the structures of racism that sustain and perpetuate racial inequity. Community Action Agencies across the country have worked at these layered intersections for decades. In May 2020, following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the National Community Action Partnership (NCAP) released a statement expressing the centrality of racial equity to the work and values of community action:

During this season of heightened social anxiety, Community Action affirms that our healing as a nation is tied to strengthening our connections as neighbors, family members, co-workers, and communities. Our values assert, “We believe that all people should be treated with dignity and respect and recognize that structural race, gender and other inequities remain barriers that must be addressed.” If we truly believe this, we must live it.

SSCAC and the network of Community Action Agencies in Massachusetts echo this national recognition of the need for and commitment to the ongoing and necessary advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our communities and in our agencies.
