Our History

For nearly 60 years, SSCAC has made a powerful difference in the lives of disadvantaged children, elderly, and families in every community on the South Shore.

South Shore Community Action Council was founded under the auspices of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and President Johnson’s War on Poverty. We are one of 23 Community Action Agencies across the Commonwealth and over 1,000 CAAs throughout the US. Founded in 1965, SSCAC was originally located in Scituate, but later moved to Plymouth. Our Head Start was among the first programs that we offered to help low-income preschoolers and their families. Over the years, our services have changed and expanded to meet the evolving needs of disadvantaged people of all ages.
